Leeds Career :
David signed for the Rhinos at the start of the 2000 season from Sydney Roosters however he only played for one season before returning to Australia. He played in 33 of the Rhinos 35 games that season but struggled recover the form that had seen him become a regular for New South Wales in the State of Origin in Australia. A very popular figure, he scored 7 tries in his only season at the club.
Rugby Career :
David appeared in the semi final series in Australia every season in the 1990’s as well as appearing on 6 occasions in the State of Origin for New South Wales and a regular member of the New South Wales Country side. “Barny” started out with Canberra Raiders where he played for three seasons, culminating in an appearance in the 1991 Grand Final. The following year he moved onto St George when he returned to the Grand Final, however he again lost out to Brisbane this time. Lightning struck twice the following year as Barnhill lost out in his third Grand Final. However, the run of bad luck was not to end there as he lost out again in 1996 for St George against Manly. In 1997 he moved onto Sydney Roosters and played three seasons there before moving onto Leeds, ironically the Roosters made the Grand Final the year after he left, but they too could not win.
David appeared for Ireland in the World Cup in 2000 and was an integral part of their march to the Quarter Finals. He played in all four games and scored a crucial try in the final group game against the New Zealand Maoris in Dublin.
