Leeds Career :
Tonie became an instant hit at Headingley in 2001 when he arrived from Brisbane Broncos. He finished his first season as top try scorer with 23 tries in 28 games including hat-tricks in consecutive games. The following year was a frustrating one for Carroll as he struggled with injury however he still managed 22 appearances scoring eight tries. After two seasons at the Rhinos he returned to his first club Brisbane Broncos.
Rugby Career :
A tough, straight runner, Carroll broke the 1998 Grand Final open after half time with his side trailing 12-10. He also scored the winning try in the 1998 State of Origin series for Queensland. He appeared for New Zealand in the World Cup in 2000, scoring four tries in four starts including the try of the match in the Final. One of his main reasons for returning to Australia was the chance to test himself at State of Origin level again.
Tonie's only other club was the Brisbane Broncos where he made 97 appearances before joining the Rhinos. He originally played for the Waterford club before signing professionally with the Broncos. He won three Premierships with Wayne Bennett's side in 1997 (Super League), 1998 and 2000 (both NRL). Carroll also won a World Club Championship winners medal with the Broncos in 1997 when the beat Hunter Mariners in the Final of the global competition.
