Leeds
Career :
Kallum was identified by the Leeds scouting network whilst living at home in Manchester and playing for his home team, Latchford Albion. Kallum re-located to Leeds shortly afterwards and began an apprenticeship at the Leeds Rhinos Junior Academy and Reserve Grade Teams.
Kallum was promoted to the first team squad in March 2008, when he was still only 16 years of age. He joined the Rhinos in 2007, having impressed during a trial period, and he had a dream debut season at the club scoring 13 tries in 20 appearances for the Junior Academy as they headed for Grand Final glory.
He scored the opening try in the Rhinos 26-16 win over St Helens in the Grand Final at Headingley Carnegie and earned himself a place in the England U17 squad to play the Australian Institute of Sport.
If anything he started off the 2008 season in the even better form, scoring 11 tries in the opening five games including a hat trick in the opening game for the Reserve Academy against Hull KR and four tries a week later against Castleford. That form led Brian McClennan to call Kallum up to first team squad for the first time against Celtic Crusaders in the Carnegie Challenge Cup. |
Rugby
Career :
Kallum made his debut for England U17 against the Australian Institute of Sport as a substitute in the first test at Warrington's Halliwell Jones Stadium. England were unlucky winners that night, 28-26, having led for the majority of the game however a week later Kallum, along with Rhinos team mates Paul McShane and Chris Clarkson, help the young Lions restore pride with a 38-22 win at Wakefield's Belle Vue. |
Personal
Details :
The groundbreaking partnership between the Leeds Rhinos and Park Lane College Leeds - which has already enhanced the streaming of young talent into the club – also allows Kallum to study a BTEC National Diploma in Sport, which fits around his commitments at the Leeds Rhinos.
Kallum's older brother Kash Watkins played for Warrington Wolves Junior Academy in 2006. |
