Career :
An ever present in 2007 Jamie had an amazing season that culminated in him scoring a try in the Grand Final before making his Great Britain debut. Jamie is one of 16 players in the current Rhinos squad who have risen through the ranks at the club and one of six to have played for Great Britain.
It is testament to the Jamie’s hard work and ability that he has successfully been able to make the transition from the Rhinos Academy to the first team squad where he has become one of the side’s most consistent performers.
Signed in August 1997, Jamie is part of a crop of players who have risen through the ranks at the Rhinos to form the heart of the current squad. He took only two years to break through to the first team, making his debut following the Challenge Cup win at Wembley in 1999 when all the resources at Headingley were called upon and Jamie made a highly impressive performance. However frustration followed in 2000 and 2001 when a series of niggling injuries prevented him from joining the new generation of Rhinos stars coming through the ranks. However, Jonesy is an extremely hard trainer and in 2002 he battled back to become an integral part of the first team squad making 22 appearances and scoring three tries, the first of his Leeds career. He scored his first try away at Salford in May 2002. In 2003 he made a further 11 appearances for the Rhinos. 2004 saw a turnaround for Jamie, with an injury free season, he became a key part of the Rhinos squad, illustrated by his return to the side for the Grand Final Eliminator against Wigan which led to appearances in the 2004 and 2005 Grand Final, a try scoring appearance in the Carnegie World Club Challenge and a place in the 2005 Powergen Challenge Cup Final side. He has now made 85 appearances for the Rhinos including 52 as a substitute and has scored 19 tries. Jamie scored the first hat trick of his career in 2005 with three tries in the defeat at Knowsley Road. |
Rugby
Career :
He represented England Schoolboys in 1997 which was followed up with two substitute appearances for the Great Britain Academy in 1998. He is a credit to Stanningley, his former club, with whom he still shares close links and where he took the Super League Trophy just 48 hours after taking part in the Grand Final at Old Trafford. His return to prominence in 2002 saw him again return to international recognition with a place on the England A squad to the South Seas, scoring two tries in the opening test win over Fiji and in 2005 he was selected for the England squad to play France, where he scored a try in the 22-12 win at his home ground, he followed this up with a substitute appearance in the following game against New Zealand. In 2006 he ended another superb season with the club with a place in the England squad for the Federation Shield tournament and aided the side to a winning start with a try in the opening game against France.
In 2007 after a superb domestic season Jamie was recognised for his achievements by earning a place in the Great Britain squad, making his debut off the bench in the 28-22 win over New Zealand, when the Lions wrapped up a series whitewash over the Kiwis. |
