Leeds Rugby shows support for “Change 4 Life”!

Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Carnegie players and staff showed their support today for the Change 4 life initiative at Leeds Town Hall. The Change 4 life campaign is a new initiative, supported by the Department of Health, which aims to improve children’s diet and increase physical activity in the region to reduce the threat to their future health and happiness. Their Mission is to help every family in England to “Eat Well Move More and Live Longer”.

National and regional health care professionals, charities, government agencies and community outreach organisations came together to discuss the major issues surrounding health and physical activity and more importantly to discuss strategies for tackling the growing obesity and health problems in the region.

Speaking at the conference Alan Johnson Secretary of State for Education and Skills commented "Obesity is the most significant public health challenge we face today. The statistics tell us that if we don't take action now 70 per cent of people in Yorkshire and The Humber could be obese by 2050 with all that entails in terms of thousands of premature deaths from illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and type II diabetes. I would like to thank all those individuals and organisations that are here today that through their activities are encouraging more youngsters and adults to “Eat Well Move More and Live Longer”.

Chris Rostron General Manager for Leeds Rugby Foundation which is the charitable organisation responsible for delivering Leeds Rugby’s community based activity commented. “This has been a great day and we are very proud to be involved with this initiative. We all have a responsibility for improving our own health, fitness and well-being but it’s much more fun if you can do it with others”.
